Skwigly - Laurel & Hardy

This was just a short piece I wrote for skwigly, now I haven't had much chance to write much for them, whilst the end of the year was going on, as I work as well. But this is something I definitely want to work more on over summer. I'm going to get in touch and see if they have any projects I can cover because four months is a long time.

Skwigly - Mark Shapiro Interview

Meeting and interviewing Mark Shapiro was the highlight of BAF for me!! We were only supposed to get a twenty minute interview slot but it turned into forty, which meant for a super long interview, that took me hours to transcribe. I basically wrote every word out and then edited it down so only the interesting parts got published. This was a really long process but one that I really enjoyed, he's such a nice guy that made it really easy to feel comfortable to ask questions. I tried to ask ones I thought would benefit the readers most, and also the ones I was most interested in knowing the answers to. I think interviewing is something I would definitely be up for doing more of, maybe it's a calling!

Skwigly - Frozen Fever

This was a really fun article to write, I was walking through discount brands and they had a massive section of Frozen merchandise, including kitchen roll and toilet roll, and with the new short coming out to be shown before the new live action Cinderella, Steve suggested it would be a really exciting thing to cover. When I initially wrote it before christmas as a suggestion for christmas present Ideas, they didn't have time to edit it and with me being a new writer the first few articles I've written they've wanted to go through and edit with me so they can make sure I'm learning from the process. So we decided to wait and time it with the Big Hero 6 release and put some of that crazy merchandise on too. I'm really enjoying writting for Skwigly and it's run by such an amazing team of people that are so passionate about the industry, I think it's helping me grow contacts and confidence in my own abilities.

Skwigly - Anthony Stacchi & Graham Annable

This was definitely and unbelievably the highlight of 2014 for me. I got to meet the directors of BOXTROLLS! HOW EXCITING! So steve posted a week before that anyone in London who was interested could go interview them, I was straight up I WILL GO TO LONDON AND MEET THEM. The train cost me £60 to go there and back during the day, I got my christmas shopping done. Went to the natural history museum and then after tea (which I didn't finish because I was so nervous about meeting these legends) I pottered on up to Soho to go meet them in their swanky hotel. I meet Steve at reception (another writer for skwigly who works in a studio in LDN), and we were escorted to their ridiculously large suite. I had prepared a few questions but it was primarily Steve's interview being a more experienced writer, that meant I got to ask my questions, and not have to write it up! Amazing!

They were so lovely and down to earth and gave a real eye opener into the making of the film, and also there background and the way they work. I loved them. I wish I was Graham Annable. Maybe our paths will cross again and one day I could work for him. (Tony was lovely too but he came across like he might not live in as much of a fantasy world, I imagine Graham dreams of trolls and goblins where as tony is much more down to earth, which is probably why this partnership worked so well).

Skwigly - Le Petit Prince

This is super exciting, I came across this whilst routing through fresh movie trailers to keep up to date on what's due to be released soon, and saw no one else had covered it yet, so decided to write just a few words on it because I feel that this is going to be a big underground hit when it comes out. What I love most about it is how many different techniques of animation it uses and how cinematographically beautiful it looks. The little prince has sold 140million copies worldwide, it's supposedly one of the best selling books, it's destined to do well because it's already based on a great narrative. I am super duper excited for it. I found this easier to write up about because I was so engaged with the trailer myself, and I was amazed how much of a difference this made, also not a lot of other people had written about it so I didn't have to look for things to say that everyone else has already said so this was much faster to whip out.

Skwigly Home.

You might think that because this is a short article with a lot of facts in it'd be a fast one to write. But I actually found this really hard, because my natural writing style, is to write as I speak. Which often can be quite subjective and Skiwgly have a very strict be objective, concise but not short and sweet it still needs to have a bit of length to it. So I often find myself arguing with the sentence construction, as this is a massive weakness for me. I'm really enjoying doing these shorter articles though because I think it is making me think about my writing a lot more, so hopefully in a few months these blog posts will improve because it will come naturally to me.

As I'm not allowed to be subjective on skwigly, I thought I would be here. I really feel for Dreamworks because they've had to drop a lot of staff recently because they aren't making as much money as they would like to. Mr Peabody and Sherman and Turbo didn't do as well as they would of liked. The future of dreamworks kind of is in how well the next couple of films do and so there's a lot of pressure on this film, and I think they are feeling it. There's an allstar line up in this film and I think that could improve it's chances. There's a lot of cute moments, that look like it could make it quite funny. I just think with the best kids animations there needs to be subtle jokes for adults too, at the end of the day it's the adults that pay for the kids to see the film in the cinema, and to me this film trailer makes it seem like the script is quite dumbed down. We don't want dumb kids, I need more intelligence in my animation to appreciate more. Not even intelligence just less patronising. I think it looks like all the best bits could be in the trailer which is really sad and I don't think we can expect great things from this film, but I could be wrong.
